John Scarland came to painting as an adult and has no formal training. His work comes from the heart, painting inspirationally, naturally and with a quiet strength rather than startling or shocking.

Widely varying in both subject matter and style, his work can cover several topics or themes. He thinks of his work as a progression, one idea leading naturally to another, often culminating in a major piece in oil, from which one can detect elements from forerunning works. One consistency in any selection of John’s work is the confidence and authority with which he executes the form of the figure.

Aficionados of his work will recognise major points in his painting career - Birth, Love, Marriage, Friendship and Faith. From those major points, come themes such as Harvesting, Freedom, Battle, Calm and Joy.

One of John’s most ambitious works has been “Forty Days” when he produced a piece of work each day for forty days, using daily routine and people he came across in those days as inspiration. With the addition of poetic descriptions of where the inspiration for each piece came from, it gave a brilliant insight into the workings of what is a complex and emotive mind.

John has won the Daler Prize at the Royal Watercolour Society and has work in collections all over the world, as well as being a mentor for several young, talented artists.
