BILLY CHILDISH

Dubbed by The Independent ‘the agent provocateur of contemporary culture’ Billy Childish defies the inclination to categorise him solely as any one thing that he enjoys doing; musician, poet or painter. This Chatham born Renaissance man has led a chequered artistic life, having been accepted by St Martin’s School of Art as a student ( lacking the normal entry qualifications but showing outstanding artistic talent) he was then refused a grant. Decamping to Medway College of Design (who had refused him the previous year), he was put on probation and refused a certificate of completion at the end of his college year!  He has subsequently taught at The Royal College of Art.

He has painted thousands of pictures and wood cuts, produced hundreds of albums, written countless poems,  published dozens of very limited edition books and made and appeared in his own films. Documentaries have been made about him and he is meat and drink to the Sunday supplements. Famously associated with Tracey Emin as a long term partner during the 80’s and 90’s, Billy Childish takes all of this in his stride and is indifferent to his notoriety.

Founder and now ex-member of the Stuckists, Billy gigs when he wants, writes when he wants and paints once a week, on Sundays. As a self-styled Sunday Painter, he is quite pleased when you like his work but isn’t worried if you don’t.

Billy will be featured in a major exhibiton at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), in the Mall, from 17th Feb - 18th April 2010. The ICA are showing not only paintings and woodcuts, but covering his output as a musician and poet. The ICA show runs concurrently with an exhibiton of his paintings at 'White Columns', New York. This will run 5th March - 17th April 2010.
